CANADIAN RESEARCHERS ANNOUNCE

MEDICAL CANNABIS COULD HELP THE FIGHT AGAINST COVID -19

Data collected during the last four years, at the University of Lethbridge (University of Lethbridge-Colleg & University in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada) promises that certain cannabis extracts may help prevent COVID-19.

Researchers Olga and Igor Kovalchuk have been examining the effects of medical cannabis since 2015. In addition to the effects of cannabis on stress, inflammation, obesity, and cancer, they explain that CBD can bind to certain receptors (ACE2) thus preventing the virus from entering the cells.

“The ACE2 receptor is key to binding, entering and replicating the virus in the body. With the anti-inflammatory effect of cannabis, this process can be slowed down, which could reduce the spread of the virus in the body.

According to the researchers, it is important that cannabis extract contains high concentration of CBD (cannabidiol), without or with minimal presence of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

“The next step is to conduct clinical trials, but still, given the current epidemiological situation and the rate at which the virus is spreading, we need to seize every potential therapeutic opportunity to fight the Corona virus,” the researchers said.
