FORVITA® AVIREX capsules contain Vitamin D, Zinc and Vitamin B12.

Vitamin D is liposoluble vitamin which is produced in human body by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sunlight, by taking certain types of food in a form of vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) or vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol), as well as with dietary supplements.

Principal physiological function of vitamin D is maintenance of serum concentrations of calcium and phosphorus at level that supports cell processes, neuromuscular function and bone formation, with which vitamin D plays an important role in growth and development, normal mineralization and maintenance of bones and teeth. Vitamin D is also important for normal muscle function. This vitamin has an important function in regulating cell division and differentiation.

Vitamin D plays an important role in regulating function of immune system and immune response. It is especially important to pay attention on the adequate intake of vitamin D in periods of the year when exposure to UV rays and the sunny periods that are important for producing vitamin D in the organism are reduced.

Adequate intake of this vitamin is also important in children in the period of growth and development.

Vitamin D is also important for elderly, in whom this vitamin can reduce the risk of falls, and hence the risk of bone fractures.

Zinc is essential oligo-element which should be taken with food or by using products that contain zinc, considering that it is not produced, nor stored in the body. Zinc is necessarily needed for adequate growth and development, for several metabolic processes of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, for the synthesis of DNK and cell division, as well as for protection from the oxidative stress and for several other biological reactions.

Zinc is necessary for functioning of the immune system. Also, zinc is very important for maintenance of vision, structure of skin, hair and nails, for the reproductive development, brain functions, as well as for many other processes in the body.

Adequate intake of zinc is particularly important in vegetarians, vegans and individuals with life style that includes consumption of bigger quantity of cereals, legumes and similar food which contains phytates – compounds that decrease the zinc absorption.

Due to increased daily requirements for zinc in children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women, particular attention should be paid on its intake.

Vitamin B12 is an essential water-soluble vitamin that is found in nature only in foods of animal origin and, like zinc, should be taken with food or using products containing Vitamin B12, as this Vitamin is not produced nor is it stored in the body.

This vitamin is a cofactor of two important enzymes necessary for anabolic and catabolic processes in the body, especially for cell division, erythrocyte formation and myelination of nerve cells.

Vitamin B12, in addition, is necessary for maintaining normal levels of homocysteine in the blood, and thus the structure and function of the nervous system, especially for maintaining cognitive functions (such as concentration, learning, memory, reasoning), reducing the risk of their decline with aging. Normal homocysteine levels are also associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular and neurovascular disease, impaired renal function, and a possible reduced risk of breast cancer.

In general, Vitamin B12 plays an important role in the growth and maintenance of the body, in all stages of life.

Low levels of vitamin B12 in pregnant women are associated with an increased risk of neural tube defects. Certain population groups with a particular lifestyle, such as vegans and vegetarians, are at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency due to the absence of vitamin B12 in their diet. 10-30% of the elderly, as well as people with certain diseases, have reduced absorption of vitamin B12. For these population groups, vitamin B12 supplementation is recommended for better general health.
